11/1 Rome as a “republic”

JQ: What does republic mean? In the pledge of allegiance the term republic is used. What does this signify?

In Class

1. Discuss the meaning of the term republic.

2. Review notes about different types of governments: monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. What are the differences between them?

3. Review the different categories of Rome’s “balanced government.”

  • Office of the Consul (in place of kings…)
  • Senate (aristocratic branch of Rome’s government)
  • Assembly (power of the people)

4. Complete handout titled “The Roman Republic.”

5. Play the “powers game” on the smart board.
